Love for Enemies

Luke 6:27-36

“But I tell you, who hear me: Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you…”

Jesus is giving us the real, true definition of love in here. Jesus is telling this for those people with ears to hear, not for those who have closed their ears to his teachings (those who have already decided for themselves that they have made up their mind on the authority of themselves in their life).

Love your enemies, is completely upside down, but as we let the Holy Spirit work in us instead of what we’ve been conditioned by the world to function. Enemies are supposed to be hated that’s why they were called enemies in the first place. But Jesus had enemies in his time, these are people who didn’t have ears to hear what he was saying. Not those of whom he has purposely hurt out of just revenge but they got hurt because God loves them so much not to tell the truth, it is the breaking of one’s ideals. What we grew up with, family, culture, society (the tooth for a tooth / tooth & claw mentality). These enemies became such because they see only conflict, they don’t see union, they could have been made to believe because that’s how we’ve survived so far & that has seeped through our soul. That’s why Jesus came to let us know that there is an adversary of our soul. It is the unfolding of God’s mystery & truth. All these upside down call: Love – Enemies, Good – Hate, Bless – Curse, Pray – Mistreat, are the antidote to our human struggle. It is a call for obedience, through obedience, the Holy Spirit will be able to work in us. Do the first step of obedience, then that’s when the Holy Spirit can work freely in us & through us.

I know what we’re thinking if we get stuck to our own thinking, “There is no way I can love my enemies.” Because we are functioning out of the hurt they have caused you, but what if even that we submit to God. As painful as it is to imagine yourself running to your father because he knows the cure, & that is the cure, wouldn’t you take it?

Now take it, then that moment of obedience is when the Holy Spirit takes over. You will know he has taken over because even you wouldn’t know how to do that, to love your enemy? Then you became emptied of yourself, you stop thinking from your childhood, cultural conditioning, then you’ll let the truth of the gospel, God’s word function in your life. He is developing a character in you, the character Jesus functioned with while he was here on earth because that is who he is & that is a reflection of our Heavenly Father.

Now see there is no quick fix, if you be diligent in studying the word, it’s deep, there is more, it is an adventure to the truth. True Joy, True Love, True Peace, True Patience, True Kindness, True Faithfulness, True Goodness, True Gentleness & True Self Control.

Imagine doing life on your own, your own ideals & own bitterness & feel so alone, exhausted, empty for you to meet human nature, & then imagine having Jesus walk with you as you follow him, with the Holy Spirit empowering you. God the one who created you & the heavens & earth & the family of God he’ll give you access to love on & walk with in this difficult life.
